The battle in the US between supporters of the UIGEA and
the IGREA continues with Congressman Barry Frank stating that the Internet
Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act will not overturn the UIGEA anytime
soon, with no expected action this year.
Pressure from other countries has caused a revival of the legislation with the
WTO receiving specific compensation plans from countries who have been
economically affected by the UIGEA with losses said to be in the billions.
Although the bill lacks enough support at this time, the support is growing and
there are movements rallying support from online casino players, gamblers from
all over the world see the necessity of such a bill in hopes that other
countries will follow suit and regulate online gambling instead of pursuing a
blanket ban. To date there are 36 political co-sponsors in favor of the bill,
but not enough to put this proposal over the top.
Other studies are underway, including one by the National Research Council of
the National Academy of Sciences, have gained as many as 64 co sponsors but it
is unlikely that the arguments will be heard this year. John Conyers is expected
to initiate a bill of his own to study online gambling once again, after failed
attempts in 2002 and 2003.
