Online casinos are, without doubt, under attack in the
United States. However, as in any war, there are appropriate rules of
engagement and then there are things that just ought not to be done. Washington
State Representative Chris Strow saw one such abuse in House Bill 1243.
Strow is of the opinion that online casino activity should
be a liberty afforded to responsible adults that want to gamble in the privacy
of their own homes. The state’s 2006 internet gambling law, on the other hand,
has categorized any online gambling within the state as a Class C Felony. Class
C is a felony equal to that of possessing child pornography.
Online gambling and activity at online casinos became a
Class C Felony last year when President George Bush signed the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act into law.
“While I do see the need for protecting our citizens from
online gambling that may be scamming innocent victims, I do think that there is
also a level of accountability, as an adult, to do as he or she chooses in his
or her own home. Most certainly, choosing to gamble, or play a game of skill
such as poker, should not have been made a crime equivalent to possessing child
pornography or threatening the Governor,” expressed Strow.
The House of Commerce and Labor Committee are scheduled to hold a hearing for
House Bill 1243.
